The conversation almost always starts in the same place. Somebody sees a launch monitor priced at two thousand dollars, does a quick sum against what an hour in a commercial bay costs, and concludes that the simulator pays for itself in a year. It is a reasonable calculation. It is also wrong by a factor that is usually somewhere between three and six, because the launch monitor is not the simulator. It is the part of the simulator that has a price tag on a website.
What follows is the whole list. Every band below is a manufacturer or vendor figure checked in August 2026 and linked at the bottom of this page. Prices move, promotions come and go, and the ranges are real ranges rather than a single number chosen to make a point.
The eleven things a simulator is made of
Strip a home bay down and you find hardware, a room, and a set of recurring costs. Hardware is the launch monitor, the enclosure, the impact screen, the projector, the mat, and a computer. The room is electrical work, lighting, flooring, and in the cases that matter most, structural work. The recurring costs are simulation software, wear on the parts that get hit, and electricity.

Fiberbuilt lists its Studio mats from $1,199. This is the component people upgrade to second and wish they had bought first, because it is the one your body notices on every shot.

The line item people forget when they compare a launch monitor price against a membership. A camera or overhead unit driving course software wants a real graphics card.

The upfront cost pays itself back against the midpoint hourly rate after about 231 hours of use, which at 4 sessions a month is roughly 3.21 years. Every hour after that is cheap. Every hour you planned and did not play is not.
Resale is the one thing this model leaves out, and it cuts in your favor. Launch monitors hold value better than most electronics, so a build you sell after three years costs less than the figure above. Enclosures, screens, and construction do not come back.
The launch monitor: four real tiers, not a spectrum
The market looks continuous and behaves like four steps. Knowing which step you are on is more useful than comparing individual model names, because the step decides your software cost, whether you need a computer, and how much room the unit demands.
The first step is portable. Garmin lists the Approach R10 at $599.99 and Uneekor starts the EYE MINI LITE at $1,999. These units run on a phone or tablet, they travel to the range, and they will give you ball speed and carry. What they give you less reliably is club delivery data, and a portable radar unit indoors is working with a fraction of the ball flight it was designed to see.
The second step is consumer photometric, which is where most home bays actually land. SkyTrak lists the ST MAX at $2,995 and Foresight lists the subscription-based GC3S at $3,799. These sit beside the ball and photograph it, which means they measure the launch conditions rather than inferring them from a partial flight, and they work in a room that a radar unit would find far too short.
The third step is prosumer camera and overhead. Foresight lists the GC3 at $6,999, and Uneekor lists the EYE XO AI Studio at $6,499 and the EYE XO2 AI Studio at $10,999. This is the point where club path, face angle, and impact location stop being estimates. An overhead unit also buys back floor space, which in a converted garage is worth more than the spec sheet suggests.
The fourth step is indoor tour-grade. Trackman publishes a starting price of $13,995 for the iO. That is the launch monitor alone, before the screen, the projector, the mat, the computer, or the room, and it is a large part of the answer to why commercial bays exist at all.
The screen and the enclosure
This is the first place where a build forks in a way that changes everything downstream. A hitting net needs no projector, no impact screen, and far less depth. Carl's Place lists its DIY enclosure kit from $999.95 for an 8 by 8 with the standard screen up to $1,874.95 for a 9 by 12 in high-contrast gray, and the kit is screen, fittings, and hardware: you cut and supply the conduit frame yourself from a hardware store. A finished built-in or curved enclosure with padding and somebody else's labor is a $2,500 to $6,500 proposition.
The honest framing is that the screen is what you are buying when you buy a simulator rather than a launch monitor. It is the difference between numbers and a game. It is also the component that decides whether you need a projector, which is the second most commonly underestimated line on the list.
The projector, which is not a home cinema projector
A golf projector has two jobs a living room projector does not: throw a bright image from very close range, so the unit sits outside the arc of a driver, and stay readable with enough ambient light in the room that you can see what you are doing. That combination of short throw and high brightness is a specific and not especially cheap product category. Budget $700 at the consumer end and up to around $5,000 for the units sold specifically for simulator bays.
Two practical notes that cost people money. Mounting matters as much as the unit: a projector in the swing path is a projector you will eventually hit. And projector brightness claims are made in a dark room, so a bay you intend to use with the lights on wants more lumens than the minimum spec suggests.
The mat, which your body notices more than your eyes
Fiberbuilt lists its studio mats from $1,199, and a full bay surface with landing turf runs into the $1,800 to $3,500 range. This is the component people upgrade to second and wish they had bought first, because a thin mat over a concrete slab transmits every fat shot straight into your wrists, and a mat that lets the club bounce teaches you a strike that does not exist on grass.
If the budget has to give somewhere, giving on the mat is a false economy in a way that giving on the projector is not. You look at the projector. You hit the mat.
The computer people forget
Every comparison of a launch monitor price against a membership price that you will read on a forum has this line missing. Camera and overhead units driving rendered course software want a real graphics card, and the software publishers say so in their published requirements. Budget $1,000 to $2,500 for a machine that will hold up, or check honestly whether the laptop you were planning to use meets the stated specification. An office laptop that runs a browser perfectly well can still be unable to draw a golf course at a playable frame rate.
The running costs
Simulation software is generally a subscription now, and it is the recurring cost with the widest spread. GSPro lists $250 a year. Trackman's own shop lists the iO software subscription at $700 a year. Across a five year ownership horizon that difference alone is $2,250, which is more than some people budget for the mat and the projector combined.
Wear is the second. Impact screens stretch and mark, mat surfaces flatten where you stand, projector filters clog, and balls disappear. The estimator charges a modest annual allowance against the components that actually wear rather than against the whole build, because a launch monitor does not degrade on the same schedule as an impact screen.
Electricity is the third, and it is the one people overestimate. A projector plus a simulator PC plus bay lighting draws on the order of 600 watts. At the California average residential price published by the US Energy Information Administration, which has run around 33 cents per kilowatt hour through 2026 and is roughly double the national average, an hour in your own bay costs about twenty cents of power. Six hours a month is a rounding error on your bill, not a line item.
The room, which is where Los Angeles builds go to die
Everything above is a purchase. The room is a project, and in this city it is usually the decisive one. Published manufacturer minimums put a comfortable full swing at 9 to 10 feet of ceiling. A great many Los Angeles garages are built at around 8. Depth can be solved with an overhead unit or a net. Width can be solved by standing somewhere slightly inconvenient. Height cannot be solved with a purchase at all.
Raising a roof or converting a garage in Los Angeles is permitted construction, with plan check, inspections, and the timeline that implies. The estimator carries a $5,000 to $40,000 band for structural work, and the band is that wide because it is genuinely that wide. Running costs and cost per hour below assume 4 sessions a month of 1.5 hours, kept for 5 years, which comes to 360 hours of golf.

Every figure in that table is the estimator's own arithmetic on the published component prices, so you can reproduce any row by setting the tool to that configuration. The spread inside each row is not vagueness. It is the honest distance between the cheapest defensible version of each component and the version most people end up buying. When building actually wins
Set the estimator to a mainstream build, four sessions a month at ninety minutes, kept five years, and it comes out cheaper than both alternatives across the whole band: the same 360 hours bought by the hour is $14,400 to $30,600 against $8,180 to $23,485 to build and run. That is the tool reporting the arithmetic rather than making a case, and it is the right answer for that golfer. Somebody buying 360 hours of golf is buying a lot of hours, and hardware amortized across a lot of hours gets cheap.
The reverse is equally true and much more common. The same build used once a month for three years is one of the most expensive ways to hit a golf ball ever devised, because the denominator never arrives. The variable that decides this is frequency, and frequency is the thing people are least honest with themselves about at the point of purchase.
There are also two advantages a home bay has that no spreadsheet captures. It is available at eleven at night with no booking, and the marginal cost of a twenty minute session is zero, which changes how you practice more than the hardware does. If you would genuinely use those two properties, weight them.
What money does not buy at home
Three things, and they are worth naming before you spend twenty thousand dollars discovering them.
The first is calibration and maintenance. A commercial bay has somebody whose job includes keeping the unit aligned, the screen tensioned, and the software current. At home that somebody is you, and the failure mode is not a broken simulator. It is a working simulator quietly giving you numbers that are five yards out.
The second is the room itself as a social object. Four people around a screen is a different evening from one person in a garage, and a bay with somewhere to sit is used differently from a bay with a mat and a wall.
The third is optionality. A membership can be stopped. A garage build cannot, and the resale market is kind to launch monitors and unkind to everything else. If there is real uncertainty about whether you will still be doing this in three years, that asymmetry belongs in the decision.
