There is a piece of advice in golf so universally repeated that almost nobody examines it: get fitted. It is good advice. It is also incomplete, in a way that costs golfers real money, because the sentence stops exactly where the decision starts.
A fitting is not one thing. It is at least seven things, sold separately, at prices between 100 and 400 dollars, and the order you buy them in matters more than whether you buy them at all. Some of what a fitter measures you can measure yourself in a few minutes with a ruler. Some of it you genuinely cannot. Almost nobody tells you which is which, and the incentive to draw that line clearly sits with the person paying rather than the person charging.
So this guide does two things. It walks through what the published data actually shows about what fitting is worth, spec by spec, with the sample sizes attached. And it gives you a planner that takes what you can measure at home and puts the free steps above the paid ones, then walks your budget down a published price list so you can see where it runs out.
What a fitting actually changes
Strip away the launch monitor and the shaft wall and a club fitting adjusts a short list of properties. It is worth knowing the list, because each item has a different amount of evidence behind it and a different chance of being wrong on your current clubs.
- Lie angle. The angle between the shaft and the sole. It decides where the face points at impact relative to your swing path, which makes it a direction spec rather than a distance one. Most relevant in mid and short irons.
- Length. How long the club is. It changes where you stand, how you strike the ball, and, on longer clubs, how much speed you can produce. It also interacts with lie: change one and the other usually needs a look.
- Loft. Mostly a gapping decision. Loft is what a fitter adjusts to close a hole in your yardages or separate two clubs that are doing the same job.
- Shaft. Weight, bend profile, torque and the letter on the label. The most expensive variable to test properly and the one with the least standardisation behind it.
- Grip size. The one property on this list that a published chart really does settle from a static measurement, because the input is the hand that holds the grip rather than a swing.
- Head model. Forgiveness, centre of gravity, offset and sole design. This is the part fittings are marketed on and often the part that matters least once the numbers above are right.
- Bounce and grind. Wedge specific, and dependent on how you deliver the club and what turf you play rather than on anything about your body.
Notice how little of that list your height determines. This is the first thing to internalise about fitting: the chart on the wall is about your body, and almost everything that matters is about your swing.
What the published evidence says fitting is worth
The strongest number available comes from a manufacturer, which means it should be read with that in mind, but it is specific enough to be useful. PING's Innovation and Fitting Science department pulled the results of its last 200 iron fittings and reported the averages: players gained about 10 yards with a properly fitted 7 iron compared to the club they arrived with, ball speed rose by about 5 mph, and dispersion area fell by about 30 percent.
Two of those three numbers deserve more attention than the first. Ten yards with a 7 iron is the headline and it is the least interesting finding, partly because some of it is loft: a new 7 iron in 2026 is stronger lofted than a 7 iron from a decade ago, and a club that is really a 6 iron will go further. The dispersion figure is harder to explain away. A 30 percent reduction in the area your shots land in is a change in how often you hit a green, and no amount of loft jacking produces it.
The ball speed figure is the one that tells you what is actually happening. Five mph of ball speed with an iron is a strike quality change, not an equipment trick. It means golfers were finding the middle of the face more often with a club that fit them. That is the mechanism the other two numbers sit on top of.
The lie angle test, and what it really found
The most instructive fitting study available to the public is a small one. Plugged In Golf built 6 irons at three lie angles, 57.5, 61.5 and 65.5 degrees, spanning 8 degrees, and had 7 golfers of varying handicaps hit 7 shots with each on a TrackMan.
Comparing each tester's best lie angle to their worst, left-to-right dispersion tightened by an average of 5.5 yards, with individual improvements between 5 and 10 yards, and shot groupings centred about 3 yards closer to the target. Total distance differed by an average of 17.6 yards between each tester's best and worst angle.
Those averages are not the interesting part. The spread is. One tester gained 63 yards between their best and worst lie angle. Another moved 1.3 yards. Some golfers hit all seven shots cleanly at one angle and then produced thin and fat contact at another. Most testers drifted left with more upright clubs, which is the direction the textbook predicts, but the study noted explicitly that it was not a one to one relationship and that individual responses varied a great deal.
That is the honest shape of club fitting, and it is why this guide will not give you a spec. For some golfers lie angle is worth a club and a half of accuracy. For others it is worth almost nothing. There is no way to know which one you are from a chart, and there is a cheap way to find out by hitting balls.
One more result from the same test is worth carrying with you. The lie board recommendation agreed with the angle that actually performed best, within 1 degree, for 5 of the 7 testers. That is a good hit rate for a test that costs the price of a roll of impact tape. It is also a 2 in 7 miss rate, which is a reasonable reminder that the free test is a starting point rather than a verdict.
Why the chart on the wall is a starting point
PING publishes the best known static fitting chart in golf. You find your height along one axis and your wrist-to-floor measurement along the other, and the intersection gives you a coloured dot. The current chart has five codes, and the whole range they span is narrower than most people assume: orange at 2 degrees flat with 1 inch shorter shafts, red at 1 degree flat with half an inch shorter, black at standard, blue at 1 degree upright at standard length, and green at 2 degrees upright with half an inch longer.
The chart is genuinely useful and PING's own framing of it is that it produces a starting point rather than a prescription. The reason is worth understanding, because it generalises to every static fitting chart you will ever see.
Lie angle matters at impact, not at address. What decides whether the toe or the heel digs is the angle of the sole to the ground at the moment the club reaches the ball, and between address and impact two things happen. The golfer moves, often changing posture significantly. And the shaft bends, droop being greater in softer shafts, which lowers the toe. A measurement taken while you stand still with your arms hanging is a proxy for a dynamic event, and it is a decent proxy rather than a precise one.
So take the two measurements. Height in your golf shoes, and wrist-to-floor from the ground to the crease of your wrist while you stand relaxed with your arms hanging. Write them down and bring them to a fitter, because a fitter will start there. Do not order clubs from them.
The one spec a chart does settle
Grip size is the exception, and it is the exception for a structural reason: the measurement is of the hand that holds the grip, and hands do not bend on the downswing.
Golf Pride publishes bands by hand length, measured from the crease of your upper-hand wrist to the tip of your middle finger. Junior sits under 5 inches, undersize from 5 to 6.5, standard from 6.6 to 7.5, midsize from 7.6 to 9, and jumbo over 9. They also publish a glove size cross reference for anyone who would rather read a label than hold a ruler, and a confirmation check that costs nothing: hold a club, look at your upper hand, and your fingertips should barely touch the heel pad. Fingers wrapping under the heel pad means the grip is too small. Fingers that cannot reach it means too large.
If you land between two bands, the answer is not to jump a whole core size. Golf Pride's own guidance is to add 2 to 4 wraps of build-up tape under the grip, which moves the diameter a fraction of a core size. This is the cheapest meaningful spec change in golf and it is available at any shop that regrips clubs.
Two practical notes. Grip size is the spec most likely to be wrong on a secondhand or inherited set, because it was fitted to somebody else's hands if it was fitted at all. And grips wear out, so this is a spec you get a free opportunity to correct every year or two whether you plan to or not.
The shaft flex problem
Here is a fact that reframes a lot of equipment advice: there is no industry standard for shaft flex. No governing body defines what R or S means. Each manufacturer sets its own, which means two shafts both stamped S can differ in bend profile, weight, torque and where along the shaft they bend most.
The conventional bands, which you have seen a hundred times, run roughly senior below 85 mph of driver clubhead speed, regular from 85 to 95, stiff from 95 to 105, and extra stiff above that. They are a useful scale and a poor prescription. The planner below reports which band your speed falls in and, more usefully, whether you are sitting on the edge of one.
The edge case is the one that matters. A golfer at 94 mph reading a chart orders regular. A golfer at 96 mph orders stiff. Those two swings are effectively identical, and the chart has just sent them to different shelves. If you are within a few miles per hour of a boundary, the chart has no opinion worth having and hitting four shafts on a launch monitor will settle in twenty minutes what no amount of reading will.

Prices come from one fitter's published list, chosen because it posts a price and a session length for every fitting it sells. A full bag fitting on that list is 400 dollars for 3 hours, and single club fittings run from 100 to 175 dollars. Your local fitter will differ, sometimes a lot, and many credit the fee against a purchase. Use these as a scale rather than a quote, and ask about the fee credit before you book.
The result most golfers find surprising is that the driver fitting, which is the one people buy first and the one with the most marketing behind it, rarely comes out on top. What to do for free, before you spend anything
Three things, in this order, none of which need an appointment.
Check your grip size. A ruler and thirty seconds against the published bands, then the heel pad check next time you hold a club. If it is wrong, the fix is a regrip and it is the cheapest change on this page.
Run a lie board test. Impact tape on the sole of a 6 iron, shots off a hard flat board, and read the scuff. Toward the toe means too flat for you, toward the heel means too upright. It removes the cheapest variable before you spend anything, and on the published evidence it agrees with the best performing angle about 70 percent of the time.
Map your carry gaps. Ten shots with every club on a launch monitor, average carry written down, then look for the yardages you have no club for and the slots doing the same job twice. This is the one that changes what you ask a fitter for, and it is the one golfers skip most. Do those three and you arrive at a paid fitting with a grip size, a lie hypothesis, and a full set of carry distances. A fitter who does not have to spend the first forty minutes of your session establishing those can spend it on the things you cannot do yourself.
What a good fitting session looks like
A few things separate a fitting worth paying for from a sales appointment with a launch monitor in it.
- You hit your own clubs first. Without a baseline from the clubs you actually own, there is nothing to compare the recommendation against, and any new club will look good after a warm up.
- The fitter is not tied to one brand. Brand tied fittings are not useless, and you should know which kind you are buying before you book.
- You see the numbers. Ask for the session data. A fitter confident in the recommendation will hand it over, and it gives you a baseline to measure against a year later.
- Enough shots to mean something. Three swings with a shaft is noise. The published test above used seven shots per configuration and still reported variation between testers.
- The fee arrangement is clear up front. Many fitters credit the fee against a purchase, which changes the arithmetic entirely. Ask before you book, not after.
One thing to be realistic about: a fitting is a snapshot of your swing on one day. If you are mid lesson block and your swing is changing quickly, fitting a full bag is buying specs for a golfer who will not exist in six months. Fit the clubs you need now, and wait on the rest.
Why indoor bays became where fitting happens
Nearly every fitting now happens indoors, and that is not a compromise. It is the only way to get the measurement right.
A fitting is a comparison between configurations, which means every variable that is not the club has to hold still. Outdoors, it does not. Wind changes between the third shaft and the fourth. Temperature drifts through the session and takes ball speed with it. Range balls fly shorter than the ball you play and vary between buckets, which puts a moving error into every reading. The lie of the ground changes. None of those cancel out over seven shots.
Indoors, with the same premium ball every time and a launch monitor recording every strike, the only thing changing between shots is the club. That is what makes a fitting a measurement rather than an impression. The Plugged In Golf lie test was run indoors on a TrackMan for exactly this reason, and it is the same argument that makes an indoor bay the right place to collect the carry numbers you bring to a fitter.

Which is why the order matters more than the decision. Measure your hands, tape a 6 iron, write down your carry numbers. Those three cost nothing, they settle the parts of fitting that a static measurement genuinely can settle, and they turn the fitting you eventually pay for into a session about the things only a fitter can tell you.

Those averages include plenty of golfers who are not consistent. The honest caveat is that a fitting cannot fix a swing, and a golfer taking lessons and changing quickly should fit for where their swing is going rather than buy a full bag they will outgrow.
How much does a golf club fitting cost?
Somewhere between nothing and about 400 dollars, depending on where you go and whether you buy. Club Champion publishes its full list: 400 dollars for a three hour full bag fitting with a putter, 325 for two and a half hours without, 175 for a driver, 175 for irons and wedges, 125 for a fairway wood or hybrid, 125 for a putter, and 100 for a wedge. Big box retailers often run free or heavily discounted fittings tied to a purchase, and many independent fitters credit the fee against clubs you buy. The number to ask about before you book is not the fee, it is whether the fee comes back if you order, and whether the fitter is tied to particular brands.
Can a height chart tell me what clubs to buy?
It can tell you where a fitter would start, and that is genuinely useful, but it cannot tell you what to order. PING's colour code chart maps a height and wrist-to-floor pair to a dot, and the current chart spans five codes from orange at 2 degrees flat and 1 inch short to green at 2 degrees upright and half an inch long. PING's own framing is that this produces a starting point. The reason is that lie angle is a dynamic property: what matters is the angle of the sole to the ground at impact, and the shaft bends on the way down, so a golfer's posture at address is a weak predictor of what the club does a quarter of a second later.
