How much room does a simulator need? Measure the ceiling first.

Almost every guide to this question leads with square footage. Square footage is not what stops people. Ceiling height is, and it is the one dimension you cannot negotiate, rearrange, or buy your way out of without a contractor. Here are the published numbers from the companies that make the hardware, a checker for your own room, and an honest read on what the standard Los Angeles garage can and cannot hold.

There is a specific moment that repeats in every conversation about building a home golf simulator. Someone has read about impact screens and projectors, priced a launch monitor, picked out a mat, and worked out roughly what the whole thing costs. Then they go stand in the garage with a 7-iron, take a slow backswing, and hit the ceiling.

That is the entire project, decided in about four seconds. Everything else on the list has options, substitutions, and cheaper versions. Height does not. It is set by framing that already exists, and changing it means raising a roof or digging a floor.

So this guide runs in the order the decision actually happens. Ceiling first, then depth, then width, then the tracking technology that changes all three, then what to do when the answer is no. Every figure cited here comes from a manufacturer or vendor planning document, and those are linked at the end so you can check them against the exact unit you are considering.

The three numbers, in order of how often they kill a build

A simulator room has to satisfy three independent constraints, and they fail at very different rates.

  • Ceiling height. Fails most often, and it is the only one that fails permanently. Most residential rooms in Los Angeles were built with 8-foot ceilings, and most adult golfers need 9.
  • Room depth. Fails often with radar hardware and rarely with camera hardware. Depth is also the constraint most likely to be solved by a different piece of equipment rather than a different room.
  • Room width. Rarely fails outright. It usually degrades instead: you end up teeing off-center, aiming across the screen, and losing the ability to let a left-handed friend play.

Measure the room first, including the lowest thing in the ceiling: a garage door track, a beam, a light, a sprinkler head. Enter the lowest number, not the highest. Nothing here is sent anywhere, and the figures behind every verdict are published specs linked further down this page.

This room works, with a compromise

You clear every published minimum, but the ceiling height sits below the figure at which the room stops being a constraint. Setups like this get built and used every day. The usual cost is that you stop making a free full swing, and a swing you are protecting is a swing you are changing.

    Width is about standing comfortably over the ball and swinging without sensing a wall, plus room for the screen frame on both sides.

The swing-clearance figure is a planning range, not a measurement of you. Before spending anything, stand where the tee would go, take a slow full driver swing, then a real one, and watch the clubhead. If you find yourself shortening the backswing to stay off the ceiling, the room is too low no matter what this tool says.

Ceiling height: the number that decides it

Here is what the manufacturers publish, in their own planning documents.

Notice that these numbers are not measuring the same thing. SkyTrak's 8-foot figure is about your swing, because the unit sits on the floor beside the ball and does not care about the room. Uneekor's 9-foot figure is about the sensor, which mounts overhead at a fixed distance in front of the tee and stops working correctly if it is too low. Trackman's figure is about both, because a radar unit wants to see as much ball flight as it can, and a low ceiling shortens what it sees.

Why your own number is probably higher than you think

The clubhead in a full driver swing peaks somewhere above your head, and how far above depends on your height, your arm length, and how upright your swing plane is. As a planning range, two to three feet above your standing height covers most golfers. A 5-foot-10 golfer is looking at roughly 7 feet 10 inches to 8 feet 10 inches of clearance wanted; a 6-foot-2 golfer at roughly 8 feet 2 inches to 9 feet 2 inches.

That range is a starting point for planning and nothing more. The only real test is the one Trackman describes in its own guidance: swing. Slowly at first, then at speed, with the longest clubs you actually play. Their planning notes make a point that gets ignored constantly, which is that being even slightly aware of the ceiling changes what you do. A golfer protecting a low ceiling shortens the backswing, flattens the plane, and quietly starts practicing a different swing than the one they take to the course. The room passes on paper and fails at the thing you bought it for.

Measure the lowest object, not the highest point. Garage door tracks, opener rails, exposed beams, ductwork, light fixtures, and sprinkler heads all count. A 9-foot garage with a door track hanging at 8 feet 2 inches is an 8-foot-2 room.

Room depth: the dimension your launch monitor chooses for you

Depth is where the hardware decision stops being about data and starts being about architecture. There are three ways a launch monitor can watch a golf ball, and each one wants the room built differently.

A single equipment choice moves the depth requirement by five feet. That is the difference between a two-car garage working and not working, which is why the honest first question in a home build is not which launch monitor is most accurate. It is which one your room can hold.

Depth also gets consumed by things nobody budgets for. The impact screen needs standoff space to absorb a strike and swing back without hitting the wall behind it. A ceiling-mounted projector needs the throw distance its lens requires, and short-throw models exist specifically because of this problem. Then there is the space behind you, which is not optional: a backswing that ends an inch from drywall is a backswing you will start shortening.

Room width: where the compromise usually happens

Width rarely stops a build. It just quietly makes it worse.

SkyTrak's studio plans put the popular 10-foot-screen build at a minimum 11 feet wide, with 12 to 14 feet as the ideal. Foresight setups are usually described at 12 feet minimum, with about 15 feet needed if you want a centered target line, meaning the ball, your stance, and the middle of the screen all line up. Trackman uses 4.6 m, about 15 feet, as its single-golfer benchmark.

Under about 12 feet, a right-handed golfer ends up teed left of center and aiming diagonally across the screen. It works. It also means every shot you hit is set up slightly differently from every shot you hit on a course, and the visual feedback of the ball flying at the middle of the picture is gone.

If a left-handed golfer needs to play from the same centered position, add roughly two feet. That is SkyTrak's own guidance, and it is the cheapest requirement on this page to plan for and the most annoying one to discover after the screen is mounted.

The Los Angeles problem

Everything above is general. This part is local, and it is the reason this guide exists.

A standard residential garage ceiling is 8 feet. New construction often goes to 9, but the housing stock across Culver City, Palms, Mar Vista, and most of the Westside is not new construction. Standard single-car garage dimensions run roughly 12 to 16 feet wide and 20 to 24 feet deep, and a standard garage door needs about 12 inches of headroom above the opening for its track, which is why the usable clearance is so often below the nominal ceiling.

Read that against the table above and the pattern is stark. The typical LA garage has enough depth for a camera-based build and often enough width. It fails on height for nearly every adult golfer, and it fails by more than it looks like once you measure to the bottom of the door track instead of the drywall. Depth and width are the dimensions you can usually live with. Height is the one you cannot, and it is the one the local housing stock most reliably gets wrong.

Raising it is not a weekend project. Removing a garage ceiling to expose rafters, re-engineering a roof structure, or converting a garage into conditioned space are permitted alterations in the City of Los Angeles, and the rules around replacing garage space and any required parking are worth confirming with LADBS before you spend anything. If you rent, the conversation is shorter, because none of this is yours to modify.

There is also a comfort question that matters more here than in Minnesota. An uninsulated LA garage in September is not a room you will practice in twice. Insulation, a mini-split, and enough power for a projector, a computer, and cooling are all part of the real build, and none of them appear in the hardware price you were quoted.

Three honest outcomes

Once you have measured, you are in one of three situations, and all three are fine.

1. The room fits, so build it

If you have 10 feet of clear height, 17 feet or more of depth, and 14 feet of width, you have a genuinely good simulator room and you should use it. Pick the tracking technology on data quality rather than footprint, because your room is not the limiting factor. 2. The room is short on height, so change what it is for

This is the most common outcome and the most misread one. A room that cannot hold a driver can very often hold a wedge, because a wedge is a shorter club moving through a shorter, flatter arc. That makes an 8-foot room a plausible short-game and putting studio, and short game is where amateur strokes actually disappear. It is a smaller ambition than the one you started with and a much better use of the space than an unusable full-swing setup.

A hitting net plus a launch monitor is the other version of this. You lose the projected picture and keep the numbers, at a fraction of the cost and in a fraction of the space.

3. The room does not fit, so use a room that does

A commercial bay is a room built to these dimensions on purpose, starting from a shell where height was a design input rather than something inherited from a 1950s garage. That is most of what you are paying for, along with hardware you do not maintain and a projector bulb that is not your problem.

How to measure your room in ten minutes

Do this before you read another equipment review.

  • Find the lowest point. Measure floor to ceiling in four places, then measure to the bottom of the garage door track, the opener rail, any beam, and any fixture. Write down the smallest number. That is your ceiling height.
  • Measure depth honestly. Screen wall to back wall, then subtract anything permanent in the way: a water heater, a washer, a workbench, the stairs.
  • Measure width at the hitting area. Not at the widest point of the room. At the spot where you would actually stand.
  • Swing a driver there. Slowly, then fully. Have someone watch the clubhead, or hold a piece of tape on the shaft and look for the mark on the ceiling. This is the only measurement that settles the question.
  • Check where the ball has to sit. If a centered tee puts you inside two feet of a side wall, you are in off-center territory, and you should decide now whether you can live with it.

Then run the numbers through the checker above with the specific tracking type you are considering. If it comes back short on height, it is not a close call and no equipment choice fixes it. That is a useful thing to learn for the price of ten minutes and a tape measure, rather than the price of a projector.

How much ceiling height do you need for a golf simulator?

Nine feet is the working minimum for most adult golfers, and ten feet is where the room stops affecting your swing. Trackman lists a 2.8 metre minimum room height, about 9 feet 2 inches, and calls 10 feet or more the practical minimum for a comfortable swing. SkyTrak lists 8 feet as an absolute floor with 9 to 10 feet recommended. Uneekor is stricter for a hardware reason: the EYE XO2 mounts overhead and its installation guide states the unit will not work properly below 9 feet. Your own number depends on your height and how upright your swing is, so measure it with a driver before you buy anything.

Can you put a golf simulator in a garage with 8-foot ceilings?

You can put a hitting net and a short-game setup in one. A full driver swing is a different question, and for most adults the answer is no. A standard residential garage ceiling is 8 feet, and the garage door track usually hangs below that, so the real clearance is often closer to 7 feet 6 inches. A wedge swing is shorter and flatter and often fits, which is why an 8-foot garage can still make a genuinely useful short-game studio. If you want driver numbers, you are looking at raising the ceiling, which is construction, or using a commercial bay that was built at the right height.

How much space do you need for a golf simulator in total?

For a camera unit that sits beside the ball, SkyTrak's own studio plans start at 11 feet wide by 16 feet deep by 9 feet high, with 12 to 14 feet wide by 17 to 20 feet deep by 9 to 10 feet high as the ideal. For radar that tracks from behind the ball, the room gets much deeper: Trackman publishes about 18 feet from the unit to the screen, so the room wants 21 feet of depth. Width of 14 to 15 feet lets you aim at the center of the screen instead of teeing off to one side.

Does a camera launch monitor really need less space than radar?

Yes, and it is the single biggest space decision you will make. A camera unit like SkyTrak+ or a Foresight GCQuad sits on the floor next to the ball, so the room only has to hold the screen standoff, the hitting area, and your swing. Radar units like Trackman 4 read the ball moving away from them and sit several feet behind you, which adds that distance to the room. Overhead units split the difference on depth but add the strictest ceiling requirement, because the sensor has to mount at a specific height above the tee.

Is 10 feet wide enough for a golf simulator?

It is enough to hit balls and not enough to be comfortable. Ten feet is roughly the published floor, and at that width a right-handed golfer tees up left of center and aims across the screen rather than straight down the middle. Twelve feet is where it starts feeling like a room instead of a closet, and 14 to 15 feet lets you center the tee. If a left-handed golfer also plays from a centered position, add about two feet to whatever number you were working with.

Is it cheaper to build a home simulator or join a club?
