Ask a golfer how far they hit a driver and you will get a number instantly. Ask the same golfer how fast they swing it and you will usually get a pause, then a guess, then a story about a friend with a radar device in a garage. Distance is a thing people remember. Speed is a thing people estimate, and the estimate is almost always generous.
This is a strange state of affairs, because speed is the number that causes the distance rather than the other way around. The USGA measured 627 recreational golfers on launch monitors between 2021 and 2023 and found that clubhead speed explained 92 percent of the variation in how far they drove the ball. Ball speed explained 94 percent. Nothing else in golf comes close to that kind of explanatory power, and both numbers appear on the same screen the moment anyone hits a driver in front of a launch monitor.
So the useful version of this topic is not how to swing faster. It is this: find out what your two numbers are, work out which of them is costing you more, and then spend your time on that one. The rest of this guide is the arithmetic and the evidence for doing exactly that.
What the governing bodies actually measured
The USGA and The R&A publish an annual distance report, and since 2007 it has included measured launch conditions from the PGA Tour, captured by radar as part of the ShotLink system. It is the least commercial source of swing speed data that exists, because the organisations publishing it are trying to decide whether the game is getting too long, not trying to sell anyone a driver.
Here is the shape of it. In 2007, the average measured clubhead speed on the PGA Tour was 112.4 mph and the average ball speed was 165.4 mph. In 2024, those numbers were 115.9 mph and 173.6 mph. That is 3.5 mph of clubhead speed and 8.2 mph of ball speed across seventeen seasons of professional golf, full time training, and equipment development.
Sit with that for a second, because it reframes every claim you have ever read about speed training. The best golfers in the world, with every resource available, moved the Tour average by three and a half miles per hour in seventeen years. Any product promising you fifteen mph in six weeks is promising you four times what an entire generation of professionals managed.
The distribution is more interesting than the average. In 2024 the mean of the fastest 5 percent of measured Tour clubhead speeds was 125.6 mph, and the mean of the fastest 1 percent was 129.3 mph. The very fastest cohort in professional golf sits about 13 mph above the Tour average. The gap between a good Tour player and the longest hitters alive is smaller than most amateurs assume, and the gap between a recreational golfer and the Tour average is much larger.
For distance rather than speed, the 2025 edition of the report puts the end of season PGA Tour average drive at 302.8 yards, the LPGA Tour at 259.8 yards, the PGA Tour Champions at 282.7 yards, and the Korn Ferry Tour, remarkably, at 308.4 yards. Over the previous ten seasons the PGA Tour average grew by 1.09 yards per year and the LPGA Tour by 0.71.
What recreational golfers actually swing
The more relevant study is the one the USGA Green Section published in December 2023, which measured recreational golfers rather than professionals. Dave Pierce and colleagues put 627 golfers in front of TrackMan 4 launch monitors across the 2021, 2022 and 2023 seasons, at both public and private facilities, and had each of them hit seven balls with a driver, a 7 iron and a pitching wedge.
The sample skews the way golf skews: 87 percent male, 38 percent between 60 and 74 years old, and an average Handicap Index of 13.2 among the three quarters of participants who had one. Nearly half of them play or practise more than 50 times a year. These are not beginners.
Three findings from that study do all the work on this page.
First, speed and distance move together almost perfectly. Driving distance increased by 2.84 yards for every 1 mph of clubhead speed and by 2.02 yards for every 1 mph of ball speed. Those two slopes are the arithmetic behind the tool below.
Second, recreational golfers are not striking the ball as efficiently as they could. The study derived a smash factor from the slope of the driver trend line and reported 1.43 for the driver, 1.37 for the 7 iron, and 1.21 for the pitching wedge. The 2024 PGA Tour figures work out to about 1.498 for the driver. That difference is not a swing speed difference. It is a contact difference.
Third, distance tracks skill hard. Handicap Index accounted for 57 percent of the variation in male driving distance and 74 percent for women, and male distance rose by 30.2 yards for every 10 point drop in Handicap Index. The study also published calculated driving ability by Handicap Index: a 10 handicap man at 235 yards, a 20 handicap at 205, a 30 handicap at 175.

Both yardage figures are differences, not predictions of how far you hit a driver. They come from slopes the USGA measured across 627 recreational golfers, so they describe what a mile per hour is worth on average across a population of golfers. Your own swing may pay more or less, and the only way to know is to measure the same way twice. The recreational driver smash factor in that study was 1.43, so a golfer sitting on that number is normal, not broken.
The comparison is often uncomfortable, and it is meant to be. A golfer swinging 95 mph with a smash factor of 1.38 is producing 131 mph of ball speed. The 2024 Tour ratio at that same swing speed would produce about 142 mph. That is 11 mph of ball speed, worth roughly 22 yards at the published slope, available without gaining a single mile per hour of clubhead speed. Meanwhile a realistic eight week speed training block, on the evidence below, is worth about 4 mph, or roughly 11 yards.
In that example, contact is worth twice as much as speed, and it is the thing the golfer was not thinking about. That flips at higher smash factors: once you are near 1.48, contact is finished as a source of yards and speed is the only lever you have left.
What the research says about training for speed
There is real peer-reviewed literature here, and it is more sober than the advertising. A 2021 systematic review in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research by Uthoff, Sommerfield and Pichardo screened 4,557 records and included 20 studies comparing three categories of resistance training against clubhead speed and hitting distance.
The headline result: combining general resistance training with golf-specific movements produced an average clubhead speed increase of 4.1 percent and a hitting distance increase of 5.2 percent. General strength training alone produced 1.6 percent clubhead speed and 4.8 percent distance. The review concluded that eight week programmes including golf-specific movements performed at high velocities, in 3 to 4 sets of 5 to 15 repetitions, were the most effective format tested.
Convert that. At 95 mph, a 4.1 percent gain is 3.9 mph, which the USGA slope prices at about 11 yards. At 105 mph it is 4.3 mph and about 12 yards. That is a genuine, measurable improvement from eight weeks of structured work, and it is a long way from the numbers on the box.
A second systematic review, published in the Journal of Sports Sciences in 2020 by Ehlert, reached compatible conclusions about strength and conditioning interventions in golf. The pattern across both is consistent: training works, specificity helps, high movement velocity helps, and the effect sizes are single digit percentages rather than transformations.
Two practical cautions follow from that. The first is that a percentage gain is proportional, so faster golfers gain more absolute mph from the same programme, which is the opposite of what most slower golfers hope. The second is that swinging at maximum effort is how golfers hurt their backs, and none of the studies above were run on people who skipped the warm up. How to measure it so the number means something
A single swing speed reading is close to worthless, because the number moves with warmth, effort, fatigue and how much you want it to be high. A measurement worth acting on has four properties.
- It comes after a warm up. Speed rises through the first ten to fifteen minutes of any session. A cold first swing is not your speed, and neither is the swing you take immediately after reading a number you did not like.
- It is an average, not a maximum. Take eight to ten driver swings at your normal effort, throw out the best and the worst, and average the rest. Record the ball speed from the same shots so the smash factor comes from the same swings.
- It uses the same ball every time. Range balls fly slower than the ball you play and vary between buckets, which puts a moving error into every reading. This is one of the strongest arguments for measuring indoors: the same premium ball, every time.
- It is repeated under the same conditions. The point of a baseline is comparison. If you want to know whether eight weeks of work moved anything, the second measurement has to be taken the same way as the first, which is much easier in a bay than on a range in different weather.
A note on hardware, since it changes what you are looking at. Radar units track the ball and the club through space and want depth behind the golfer. Camera and photometric units photograph the strike at impact and want space in front. Both report clubhead speed and ball speed, but they arrive at club data differently, and the practical consequence is that you should not compare a number from one system to a number from another. Building a speed session in a bay
Speed work and skill work do not mix well in the same hour, because one of them asks you to swing as fast as you can and the other asks you to swing the same way every time. If you are going to do both, separate them, and put the speed work at the end.
A reasonable structure for a one hour indoor session that includes speed work looks like this. Ten minutes of genuine warm up, working up through wedges and mid irons until you are moving freely. Twenty five minutes of whatever your actual practice plan calls for, which for most golfers is not driver. Ten minutes of speed work: short sets, full effort, long rests, with the launch monitor recording every swing. Then five minutes of measurement, hitting the driver at normal effort and writing down the session average for both clubhead speed and ball speed. Finish there rather than chasing one more big number, because the last swings of a tired session are where technique goes and injuries start.
The measurement at the end is the part people skip and the part that matters. A number in a notebook once a fortnight is what turns eight weeks of work into evidence rather than a feeling. That matters more than people expect: a speed number from a warm July evening at an outdoor range and a speed number from a cold February morning are not comparable, and neither is a number taken off a range ball. Most golfers who have never seen their own ball speed assume they need speed, and a fair number of them are wrong.
